Nuclear weapons are once again being transported through the centre of Glasgow on a bridge which has been declared unsafe. Major repairs are currently being carried out on the Kingston Bridge which crosses the Clyde. Engineers have discovered major structural defects with the bridge. They have said that if lorries were queued up in the bridge on all lanes then it could collapse.
After a gap of several months, convoys bringing more atom bombs to Scotland have resumed using this route. On Thursday 3rd July a convoy travelling to Coulport crossed over the Kingston Bridge. It returned the same way on Sunday 6th July.
The photograph shows to nuclear weapons transporters on the bridge, one on the left of the picture, and one on the right. There is scaffolding under the pillar on the right hand side of the river. These lorries are heavier than most which are allowed on the roads, with a total weight of 48 tonnes. Three of these vehicles were on the bridge at the same time a few moments after this picture was taken.
