Trident nuclear convoy stopped (4 Jul 97)

A convoy carrying nuclear warheads for Trident was stopped in Scotland before it reached its destination. Protesters held up the heavily guarded convoy for 15 minutes in the town of Dumbarton on Thursday 4th July.

One overseas visitor who was taking photographs of the demonstration was arrested. A man from Glasgow who complained about this to the Police was himself taken into custody.

One protester climbed onto the roof of the leading vehicle. Others stood in the roadway. A total of seven people were detained following the protest. All had been released by the following day.

The convoy consisted of three lorries each of which was probably carrying two nuclear warheads, further increasing the number of nuclear weapons in Scotland.
