women protesters in control room of nuclear submarine (22 July 96)

Two women from Faslane Peace Camp boarded the nuclear powered submarine HMS Sceptre while it was berthed at Faslane in Scotland. This is Mhairi's account of what happened:

On Sunday 21st July Claire and I walked down the beach and just kept walking until we came to a wall with razorwire on it. When we got there we realised that if we had wet suits we could swim in. So we went back to the camp, got on our wetsuits and walked back down the beach. We waited at Timbercraft until the MoD had gone back in from their patrol, then we started to go into the water. We swam out behind the jetties, climbed on the catwalk and walked behind the berths until we came to the first sub which was HMS Sceptre. We were going to go further but there were two men working on the next sub, HMS Splendid, so we just decided to go on Sceptre.

We jumped down onto the jetty and walked up the sub. We shouted "hello" at the hatch and there was no reply, so we climbed down the steps, walked along the corridor and looked about the control room. While on the sub we used the phone to reverse charges to Faslane Peace Camp and talked to a camper for over 5 minutes. A sailor appeared from the lower deck and took the phone from Claire. We said that it was OK and that we were from Faslane Peace Camp. He was so shocked he walked into a wall. The sailor woke up an officer who asked us where we were from and what we were doing. The bandit alarm was set off. We were escorted to the casing and off the sub, where we were arrested and taken to the processing block. There we were given hot showers and clean MoD clothing.

We were then charged under the bylaws and also with Breach of the Peace for causing distress and alarm to members of the crew in the control room of HMS Sceptre. We were taken back to Dumbarton Sheriff Court and before we were due to go to court we were given a Procurator Fiscals release.
