Over one thousand people in Scotland have signed a pledge saying that they will take part in nonviolent civil disobedience in the event of a military attack on Iraq. This will be launched at a mass signing which will take place in Parliament Square Edinburgh at 1pm on Wednesday 18th September.

Amongst those expected to attend are MSPs Tommy Sheridan and Dennis Canavan. Other prominent signatories include MPs Mohammed Sarwar and George Galloway, MSPs Robin Harper and Lloyd Quinan, writers AL Kennedy, James Kelman, Richard Holloway and Angus Calder as well as actor David Hayman.

"I pledge to take part in nonviolent civil disobedience in the event of a major US/UK attack on Iraq or any other country in the course of the 'war on terrorism'."

Brian Quail, Secretary of Scottish CND said:

"We are saying that war is not the answer to the problems of the Middle East and we hope that many more people will join us in the pledge to take part in nonviolent civil disobedience in the event of military action over Iraq."

The pledge campaign has been coordinated by the Scottish Coalition for Justice not War which is a group of peace, political, trade union and other organisations.
