PROTEST AGAINST NUCLEAR WEAPONS CONVOY
Anti-nuclear campaigners will hold a demonstration this afternoon against a convoy which is bringing Trident nuclear weapons to Scotland. The convoy left the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Burghfield near Reading on Saturday 16 March, stopping overnight near Peterborough and then at Abermarle Barracks near Newcastle. It left Abermarle at 9.30 am today (Monday) and is now traveling towards Scotland.
Protesters from Faslane Peace Camp, Nukewatch and Scottish CND will be gathering to hold a demonstration against the convoy in Dumbartonshire this afternoon (Monday 18 March).
Recent convoy movements indicate that the MoD is beginning a major programme to overhaul the stockpile of 200 Trident nuclear warheads. This will involve transporting all the weapons to Burghfield, replacing key components and then returning them to Coulport. This process is expected to last several years. The first Trident warheads were delivered in 1992 and some of the components need replaced after 10 years.
