Time up for Trident demonstration
Several hundred anti-nuclear campaigners marched through the centre of Glasgow on 28 Oct with the message that it was TIME UP FOR TRIDENT. The event had been organised jointly by Scottish CND and the Scottish Trade Union Congress. The march was led by the drumming group Sheboom and there was a display of banners from CND groups, Trade Unions and political parties. This was the first time for several years that a march against Trident has been held in the city.
A rally took place in the City Halls, chaired by Jane McKay of the STUC. Scottish CND chair Neil Cruickshank spoke of the ongoing struggle against nuclear weapons. Colin Campbell MSP, the SNP defence spokesperson, emphasised that we were not just asking for nuclear weapons to be taken from Scotland and put somewhere else, but for an end to these weapons. Cathy Jamieson MSP, Labour, spoke of her lifelong commitment to the peace movement. Marjan Williamsen gave a brief message from Faslane Peace Camp.
Also attending the rally were Tommy Sheridan MSP, Scottish Socialist Party, and Dorothy Grace Elder, Scottish National Party. There was also lively music from "The Smilies" skiffle band and from "La celera solsica" salsa band.
