DELAY TO STAR WARS

Anti-nuclear campaigners in Scotland today gave a cautious welcome to President Clinton's decision to delay a key part of the Star Wars project. Clinton is leaving the decision to his successor.

The National Missile Defence system is expected to cost $60 billion. Russia has indicated that if the proposal goes ahead they will stop nuclear arms cuts. George W Bush has said that he wants to spend even more money on a bigger system. Electronic facilities at Fylingsdale and Menwith Hill in Yorkshire would be expected to play a role in the project.

"This Son of Star Wars plan is as crazy as Ronald Reagan's original scheme. It is an appalling waste of money and would undermine attempts to reduce nuclear weapons. We hope that Clinton's decision will lead to the whole project being scrapped."

said Brian Quail, Joint Secretary, Scottish CND.
