Land and sea protest against HMS Tireless in Gibraltar

Local people in Gibraltar held protests by land and sea on 15th August to protest against the MoD's plans to repair a broken down nuclear reactor in Gibraltar harbour.

1,500 took part in the land protest including the organisations Voice of Gibraltar, Federation of Small Business, Self Determination Group and the United Nations Association. Joe Bossano the leader of the opposition was also present. The land protest was on Coaling Island close to where the nuclear powered submarine is berthed.

35 vessels took part in a sea protest at the same time. They included fishing boats and jet ski's carrying anti-nuclear banners. They sailed up to the exclusion zone which had been set up around the submarine. Julio Pons of Voice of Gibraltar dived into the water and swam towards the submarine. He was picked up by police and released without being arrested.
