In the past Tory, Labour and Lib-Dem MPs have all said that Britain must keep Trident so long as there is any other country in the world with nuclear weapons. But now the Junior Defence Minister, Lord Gilbert, has gone one step further. Speaking in the House of Lords on 26th November he said:

“for a country with as small a nuclear arsenal as ours, we must wait until the conventional weapons accumulated in malevolent hands are reduced to levels where they pose no threat to ourselves, our friends or our interests around the world before we can safely undertake further disarmament ourselves”.

In other words - we have to keep our 200 Trident nuclear warheads so long as there is any country out there which has any conventional weapons which might potentially threaten our interests.
