RESOLUTIONS FOR SCOTTISH CND CONFERENCE 1997

"Conference believes that, while the British possession of nuclear arms is, and must remain our main priority, we should recognise the danger of proliferation and the arsenals already held by other nations. Conference therefore calls on the UK government to actively pursue a world nuclear disarmament policy."
Roddy Chisholm

"Conference believes that our campaign against nuclear weapons is, and should remain, our main priority. Conference however, recognises the appalling suffering endured by innocent people throughout the world, as a result of non-nuclear weapons. Conference therefore calls upon the campaign to highlight these issues and calls upon the UK government and the European Union Parliament to use all resources at their disposal
(1) to prevent the spread of non-nuclear conflict
and (2) wherever possible to intervene to alleviate suffering."
Roddy Chisholm

Conference notes the commitment by Russia that nuclear weapons will no longer be targeted on NATO states, thus removing British Governments' proclaimed rationale for the retention of nuclear weapons.
Conference reaffirms that Scottish CND's primary campaigning issue within Britain remains the demand that the new Government which in its manifesto stated: "Labour is committed to a nuclear weapons free world", scrap the Trident nuclear weapons system immediately.
