FASLANE ACCIDENT EXERCISE

John Ainslie

On Monday 17th November one of the biggest nuclear accident exercises ever held will take place at Faslane. According to a report in the Glasgow Evening Times, the scenario will be that a nuclear submarine is facing a meltdown and the navy will have three days to try to cool the reactor or face disaster.

The exercise will involve trying to evacuate 5,000 people from inside the base. Argyll and Bute Council is expected to be involved in planning what action would be required outwith Faslane - although their involvement is likely to be largely a table-top exercise. Whitehall will also participate and George Robertson will be informed of developments.

Scottish CND has prepared a detailed assessment of what would happen if the containment of the reactor on a submarine failed - it would not just be the base and surrounding area which would suffer - all of Scotland downwind of the disaster could be contaminated. We will shortly be planning what we will be doing about the exercise - if you want to help, please get in touch with the office ( tel 0141 423 1222).
