Since 2002 campaigners
around the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston have uncovered
eveidence suggesting that the Government are quietly putting in place
facilities for the development of a new generation of nuclear weapons.

Women's Campaign will be in Scotland speaking about what is happening
behind the fence at Aldermaston and about their new nonviolent 'Block
the Builders' campaign which started on Hiroshima Day this year.

NEW NUKES:

June 2002: the Observer and the Guardian
newspapers report that AWE is planning to produce "mini-nukes"
(non-strategic or "battlefield" nuclear weapons);
· July 2002:
AWE plc publish their Site Development Strategy Plan, with proposals
for a supercomputer, hydrodynamics facility, new laboratories and a
laser facility;
· January 2003:
AWE's contract is extended from ten to 25 years; the new contract is
worth £5.3 billion to the joint venture company which runs AWE;
· March 2003:
Geoff Hoon states that if threatened by biological or chemical weapons,
the UK would use nuclear weapons;
· May 2003:
AWE Aldermaston starts recruiting 80 new scientists;
· November 2003:
the Ministry of Defence submit their first notice of proposed development
to the local planning authority; outline planning for the new laser
facility is agreed in December;
· December 2003:
Government Defence white paper states that a decision about a replacement
for Trident would made be in the next parliament.
· August
2004: Start of 'Block the Builders' Campaign
