Peace Camp Eviction to go ahead (2 July 98)

Paisley Court has given the go ahead for Argyll and Bute Council to evict anti-nuclear protesters from Faslane Peace Camp which has maintained a continual protest site at Britain's nuclear weapons base for 16 years.

"We're all in deep shock. We will resist eviction. We're trying to get a message across about nuclear submarines and radiation and the global threat of nuclear war. The fight will go on."
- said Fungus

"The campaign is not going to stop here. There are millions of people out there who oppose Trident, and that is not going to end just because a court has granted an order to evict us."
- said Dave Heller

"It's too late in the day to give up. We built the fortifications and now we will be using them"
- said Graham

"The Council are going to have to hire a specialist tunnel team and then they'll have to bring climbers to get us out of the tower and the trees."
- said Disco Dave

In an insulting comment, Argyll and Bute Council convener John Wilson said "The camp is not a very bonny place" - Peace Campers have gone to considerable lengths to plant flowers around the site and landscape the defences. A detailed permacultuure and sustainability plan is being implemented. In contrast across the road are the vast steel and concrete structures surrounded with razor wire of Faslane - the base for the most efficient machines for the mass incineration of human beings - Trident nuclear armed submarines.

In August Faslane will be the focus for a series of protests, whether or not moves have been made to evict the camp by then. Trident Ploughshares 2000 will have 2 weeks of Non-Violent Direct Action protests to disarm Trident from 11 to 25th August. There is a Peace Walk from NATO headquarters in Belgium which will arrive at Faslane on 9th August. CND is holding a demonstration at Faslane on 15th August.
